4 Traits of People Who Appreciate Dark Humor
We love to laugh.
And everyone enjoys a good joke. Whether it comes from watching a funny movie, listening to a comedian, or binge watching cat videos on YouTube (you know who you are).
We all appreciate different types of humor. You could say it comes down to variations in our personality. As it turns out, you can even tell a few things about a person by the types of things they find funny.
A new study revealed some surprising traits of people who appreciated dark humor.
4 Traits of People Who Like Dark Jokes
Psychologists found that participants which rated twisted cartoons touching on morbid topics could be grouped in 3 different categories.
Those groups were separated based on two things. How well they understood dark jokes, and how much they liked it.
The people who comprehended and appreciated the joke most, had these characteristics:
1. Scored highest on verbal and non-verbal IQ tests
2. Were more educated
3. Scored lower on aggression
4. Had better moods.
Experts also found that age and gender wasn’t a factor. It didn’t matter how old someone was, or whether they were a man or a woman.
But the study implies that people who enjoy darker types of humor are mentally sharp, but also more emotionally grounded.
Many people expect that if you find darker topics funny, it’s because those people might be angry. Even mean. However, this study says that isn’t the case.
So what about the people who don’t enjoy dark humor?
Those Who Don’t Like Darker Humor
The other two groups both had a “moderate comprehension” of the dark cartoons, and also had average intelligence scores.
But you could break them down between those who didn’t like the jokes, and those that found them semi-humorous.
The people who like dark humor the least?
These people had the highest scores of aggression and the lowest scores for mood. In contrast, the group that thought the jokes were somewhat funny had a more positive mood and only medium scores on aggression.
What Does It Mean?
It means that despite what most probably think, people who enjoy dark humor aren’t twisted or angry themselves. It may actually be the people who don’t like sick jokes that you have to worry about.
People that appreciate dark humor are sharper than average. The study found these individuals more emotionally stable, happier, and better adjusted. They are able to distance themselves from topics that others might find taboo.
That doesn’t mean that people who don’t like dark humor are bad. Psychology studies have shown that just being in a bad mood can reduce our sense of humor. And moods are just temporary.
But it might hint at deeper issues too. Possibly signaling there are other issues in their life causing dissatisfaction or anger. And it may result in negative attitudes or behavior when faced with darker humor or topics.
Don’t Overgeneralize An Individual
Here’s the thing you should remember, though. People’s personalities are unique. So I like to caution people that it’s hard to apply a single study’s results to an individual.
For example, someone who just had a family member pass away won’t find your twisted joke about death that funny. They could still have a healthy sense of humor, but that specific topic would hit too close to home.
On a general basis though, dark humor can be a type of litmus test when trying to decide what type of person someone might be. The researchers state that:
preference for sick humor is related to the ability to treat nasty contents as playful fiction.
So do you like hanging out with people that are happy, easy-going, and grounded? Then most likely, they’ll have a better appreciation for your occasional sick joke.
