Do Women Find Smiling Attractive?
Some women are attracted to the bad boys.
There’s something about the moody and mysterious personalities.
For nice guys, it’s a bit perplexing.
Don’t the girls know how this plays out? It might be feel fun and edgy. But in the long run, the girl usually gets hurt.
Well fellas, there’s actually a lot more going on under the surface.
You see, from an evolutionary perspective, women have to select a partner based on a number of factors. The two most important being good genes and trustworthiness.
I’ll explain in a second, but know that women look for these signals. And recent research has found that smiling fits into one of these two categories.
Nice Guy Advantage
Research has already proven that when a lady smiles, she’s more attractive. However, consistent results have been harder to nail down for guys.
Why is that?
A possible answer comes from research in Japan that was published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology.
There are two basic strategies for women when it comes to choosing a mate. There’s a long term strategy and a short term strategy. At least that’s the breakdown according to evolutionary psychologists.
The short term strategy is based on physical appearance. From our evolutionary programming this means that a person has healthy genes. At least way back in the day. So attractive = healthy. This isn’t seen as a long term strategy, though.
The long term strategy is based on trust. A partner that will stay around, provide, and help with raising the young.
The researchers believe that depending on which strategy the lady is pursuing, will make a difference in whether or not that smile will make you more attractive.
Smile for the Study
The scientists’ study was split into two parts.
The first part of the study had 218 female students from Japan, Norway, and Italy. They were to rate the attractiveness of men’s faces when they were either neutral or smiling.
But there was another twist. Half of the females were asked to rate them as a husband. The other half was told to rate them as a boyfriends going on a date.
For marriage, women rated smiling faces as more attractive than neutral. For dating, women actually rated the faces equally.
The second part took 71 of the Japanese girls from the first part of the study. This time, however, the girls were to rate smiling and neutral faces on three qualities important in selecting a partner.
They rated faces with smiles as less masculine and less mature. However, smiling faces were seen to be as more trustworthy than neutral expressions.
So as a guy, if you aren’t looking for anything too serious, you may be better off playing it cool, aloof, and uninterested.
On the other hand, if you are looking for something serious, be sure polish up those pearly whites.
But then again, not every girl is the same. Everyone is pretty unique, after all. That, and we humans are really bad at trying to guess what someone else is thinking.
So instead of trying to guess what the other person IS looking for, maybe you should just be yourself and see where things take you.
